Many years ago it was decided that the society
should build an 'O' gauge model railway as soon as space allowed.
With the sale of our former club layout 'Idleforde Junction' and the
smaller size of the new 'OO' gauge layout, it was realised that we
finally had the space to start work on the new 'O' gauge layout.
The society had, during the preceding years, purchased a couple of
locomotives and a quantity of PECO track so work started during the
early months of 2007.
The scenic section of the layout is 6 metres long,
comprising four, 1500mm long x 800mm wide baseboards, mounted on 1200mm
high trestles fitted with castors for easy movement around the
clubrooms. The heavy duty baseboards and trestles have
been constructed by our good friends at The
Goods Yard. An additional baseboard, containing a flipper unit
will be added at each end.
The track plan is to be based loosely on Great Central mainline
practice with a single island platform station at one end. A goods
facility and loco servicing point will also be included in the design.
The layout name, Shelford High Level is a provisional name. gained,
due to resemblance of the baseboards to a tall shelf when first
delivered to the clubrooms.
