| Many years ago it was decided that the society
should build an 'O' gauge model railway as soon as space allowed.
With the sale of our former club layout 'Idleforde Junction' and the
smaller size of the new 'OO' gauge layout, it was realised that we
finally had the space to start work on the new 'O' gauge layout.
The society had, during the preceding years, purchased a couple of
locomotives and a quantity of PECO track so work started during the
early months of 2007. |
| The scenic section of the layout is 6 metres long,
comprising four, 1500mm long x 800mm wide baseboards, mounted on 1200mm
high trestles fitted with castors for easy movement around the
clubrooms. The heavy duty baseboards and trestles have
been constructed by our good friends at The
Goods Yard. Additional baseboards, containing a flipper unit
will be added at each end.
The track plan is to be based loosely on Great Central mainline
practice with a single island platform station at one end. A goods
facility and loco servicing point will also be included in the design.

Recent Progress ......
January 2009 Gary has now completed
the main platform level station building. Following the Christmas
holidays, work is progressing on the scenery and electrics. Steve
Searson has now completed the refurbishment of the rake of wagons
previously donated by The
Goods Yard. May 2010 The track has now been ballasted and
painted. Gary's latest building masterpiece, the sectioned goods
shed is in place and the grass texture has been applied to the hillside.
The layout has now been moved into
our new clubrooms and it made its public debut at our May Day Open
Day. Work has processed well on the scenery and although not
complete, the layout now has the feel of a quality model railway.
Next jobs are the construction of a control panel and its associated
wiring and the building of the end 'flipper' boards. It is planned
for the layout to make its exhibition debut at our show in November so
there is much yet to be done. October 2010 The layout is
booked to make its first public appearance at this year's Retford
Model Railway Exhibition in November. Richard D has now
completed the two new 'Flipper' end baseboards and the layout has now
reached its full length of just over 10 metres. Richard D had also
completed the electrics and for the first time since the project
started, trains have now completed a full circuit of the layout
including the over the reversing fiddle yard section at the rear.
Gary and Richard B have been involved in scenic work and the cosmetic
boards on the front of the layout, the two semaphore signals are now
installed thanks to Steve Searson. Although the layout will not be
fully complete in time for the show, it will displayed as a 'work in
progress'. We will add more pictures in due course, but why not
come along to the show and view the project for yourself? November
2010 Well we finally made it!!!! After many hours of hard
work over the preceding few months, Idleford Town appeared at its
first model railway exhibition. Despite very little test running
(less than 2 hours), the layout performed almost faultlessly over the
two day event and was a credit to all who had participated in its
construction to date. At around 33ft 3ins (10.13m) in length, the
layout makes an impressive site, especially as this was only the second
time the railway had been fully assembled. In fact, none of the
team building had it ever seen the model fully erected without part of
it extending through a door in our clubroom. |
